As competitive bidding has become more common so has the need for good competitive bidding tools. When partner opens the bidding is when we are most likely to want to compete in the bidding (we need very few points) and thus the negative double is one of the most important competitive bidding tools.
Make sure that both you and partner feel comfortable with all its uses.
